Robotics Club

RLS provides students in 5th-8th grades the opportunity to learn about mechanical design and computer programming through the use of LEGO MINDSTORM robots. Students use remote controlled robots to accomplish mini challenges such as:

  • using motorized attachments to over turn their opponents robot
  • using gears to increase motor speed and be the fastest bot
  • using sensors to navigate mazes with efficiency and speed
RLS Robotics Competition Team

RLS provides students in 5th-8th grades the opportunity to compete in local, regional, state, and national FIRST LEGO League competitions. Each team is guided by an adult coach to research real-world problems and develop practical solutions. Teams must design, build, and program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS, then compete on a table-top playing field.

Robotics

Over the past several years, RLS students have won several trophies at competitions including Best Mechanical Robotic Design, Innovative Solution Award, and the Gracious Professionalism Award.

FIRST LEGO League Jr. teams will:
  • Explore challenges facing today’s scientists
  • Discover real-world math and science
  • Design and build a challenge-related model using LEGO elements
  • Create a Show Me Poster and practice presentation skills
  • Develop teamwork skills
  • Choose to participate in Expos and showcases
  • Engage in team activities guided by the FIRST LEGO League Jr. Core Values

FIRST LEGO League Jr. welcomes all skill levels. Technical and non-technical expertise is needed. Click here to learn about the basics, time frame, commitment, and skills required.

FIRST LEGO League

Tomorrow’s innovators practice imaginative thinking and teamwork. Guided by two or more adult coaches, FIRST LEGO League teams (up to 10 members, grades 4-8**) research a real-world problem such as food safeimage1 (5)ty, recycling, energy, etc., and are challenged to develop a solution. They also must design, build, program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS, then compete on a table-top playing field.

At the competition in November 2015, RLS Insane Incinerators were presented with the “Innovative Solution Award” while the RLS Tankscavators received recognition for “Gracious Professionalism”. This award is given to the team that exemplifies friendly competition where mutual gain is possible on and off the playing field.

VEX Robotics

The VEX Robotics Competition, presented by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation, is the ultimate STEM activity for middle school and high school students (ages 11-18). RLS will pilot this program beginning next week and compete next spring.
