Core Curriculum Overview

P1010706Religion

Religion is integrated into all that we teach at Resurrection Lutheran School as we are committed to educating children in the instruction of the Lord. RLS provides a Lutheran education that is Christ-centered and academically-focused. Concordia curriculum, Voyages Series, provides a consistent scope and sequence from grade to grade; however RLS teachers are passionate about incorporating God’s word into all that they teach.  At RLS we strive to lead with faith, learn with joy and live with purpose daily.

Language Arts

RLS has structured the language arts curriculum to reflect the belief that learning to read is not a passive experience. The act of reading depends on organized, systematized instruction that develops in stages. Reading requires the application of a wide array of skills and strategies for a variety of purposes. IMG_0408At RLS, students will explore the art of language through oral, auditory, visual and written means across all subject areas. Our Language Arts curriculum demands that students meet or exceed targeted benchmarks as evidence of growth and competency. It is built upon stages of reading development, best-practice research, the learning standards of North Carolina and the National Council of Teachers of English, and the International Reading Association. Though each child is a unique and precious creation, there are broad developmental reading stages readers move through, which serve as key indicators of readiness and foundational success.

Mathematics

In mathematics, learning strands represent the types of learning and skill set applications that build lifelong success for students. Strands are inherently interconnected, and not sequential. None is of greater value to the learner than another. As skills develop, students will be able to demonstrate developmentally-based, grade-level-appropriate skills across subjects and through a wide variety of instructional and assessment models.
The Six Strands of Mathematics Include:

  • Number and Operations
  • Measurement
  • Geometry
  • Data Analysis and Probability
  • Algebra
  • Problem Solving

Science

The Resurrection Lutheran School science curriculum actively integrates unifying concepts of science to provide meaningful discovery and application of skills across grade levels and among disciplines. Inquiry-based concepts, built upon national and state models, are woven throughout a young scientist’s experience. Broad-based strands of study include:

  • The Order and Organizations of Systems
  • Analysis, Operation and Construction of Models
  • Criteria Selection
  • Connection
  • Measurement
  • Magnitude and Scale
  • Relationship between Equilibrium and Stability of systems
  • Form and Function
  • Analysis, Inquiry, and Design

Social Studies

The sequence for The North Carolina Social Studies Standard Course of Studies defines in general terms the subject matter to be emphasized in social studies at each level. Face Jugs Grade 4 2009 011This general description is intended to guide local curriculum coordinators as they select specific content for each level and course. Within these general guidelines, teachers and curriculum coordinators have a good deal of flexibility as they select topics and areas of study for their students. The recommended organizational pattern is both sequential and developmental. The sequence is recommended in order to avoid overlapping content between grade levels, lack of instructional time for recommended topics, and needless duplication in the use of instructional materials. (From NCDPI’s 2006 adoption).

  • FIRST LEGO League (FLL)

RLS STEM Club will host a FLL Invitational on Veterans Day, November 11th for approximately 10-15 local FLL teams.
